Tarpaulin is the perfect material for backpacks.

In the world of backpacks, Tarpaulin (or "Tarp") is the heavy hitter. Unlike PU-coated fabrics which are just "water-resistant," tarpaulin is generally considered 100% waterproof. It is essentially a heavy-duty polyester base sandwiched between thick layers of PVC or TPU plastic.

Why Tarpaulin is Different.

While a standard PU backpack feels like "fabric," a tarpaulin backpack feels like a "truck tarp" or a "raft." It is non-porous, meaning water cannot physically pass through the material itself.

Impermeable: Water doesn't "soak" into tarp; it sits on top until it evaporates or is wiped off.

Wipe-Clean: Since it’s basically plastic, mud and grime won't stain it like they would a canvas bag.

Durability: It is incredibly difficult to puncture or tear, which is why bike messengers and white-water rafters love it.
